German authorities arrest aide to far-right MEP on suspicion of spying for China
German authorities have arrested an aide to a high-ranking far-right member of the European Parliament on suspicion of spying for China, the latest in a number of arrests in Europe.
Maximilian Krah, who was born in 1977, is a lawyer and politician who has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014. He is a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right party that has been accused of having ties to Russia.
Krah's arrest is the latest in a series of arrests of suspected Chinese spies in Europe. In 2018, a Dutch man was arrested on suspicion of spying for China. In 2019, a German man was arrested on suspicion of spying for China. And in 2020, a Belgian man was arrested on suspicion of spying for China.
The arrests have raised concerns about China's growing influence in Europe. China has been accused of using its economic power to gain access to sensitive information and technology. It has also been accused of using its intelligence services to target dissidents and critics of the Chinese government.
