Ownership of the Boston Red Sox: A Long and Storied History
The Early Years
The Boston Red Sox were founded in 1901 as one of the eight original teams in the American League. The team's first owner was a group of Boston businessmen led by John I. Taylor. The Red Sox played their first game on April 20, 1901, and finished the season with a record of 83-47.
The Yawkey Era
In 1903, the Red Sox were purchased by John & apos;Jack' A. Drew who became the sole owner four years later. Under Drew's leadership, the Red Sox won four World Series championships (1903, 1912, 1915, and 1916). Drew died in 1918 and the team was sold to Harry Frazee in 1919.
