Carlos Alcaraz keeps Madrid Open title hopes alive with dramatic win
Alcaraz tested to the limit by Struff in Madrid thriller
World number two survives three-set battle to reach quarter-finals
Carlos Alcaraz kept his Caja Magica streak alive at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open, defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3 6-7 6 7-6 4 in a rematch of their 2023 final. Alcaraz was pushed to the limit on Tuesday but found the answers when needed to overcome a stubborn Jan-Lennard Struff.
The world number two was made to work hard for his victory, with Struff proving to be a tenacious opponent. The German saved two match points in the second set tie-break and forced a fourth set, but Alcaraz eventually proved too strong.
Alcaraz will now face either Andrey Rublev or Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals. The Spaniard is looking to win his second Madrid Open title in a row, having triumphed in 2023.
